RECORDER
As a part of C. H. Campbell’s 3rd and 4th grade (and ANYONE else wanting to try something new and fun!) music curriculum, your child will soon be learning to play the soprano recorder in music class. We will begin the recorder unit on the second week of November, 2021.
If your child does not already have a recorder, purchasing a recorder is fairly inexpensive. I highly recommend the Yamaha YRS-20 Soprano Translucent Recorder with Baroque Fingering. Click on the picture of the recorders to get started on purchasing your recorder. You can even have them delivered to your door! Plan to spend about $7
Be careful not to purchase a toy recorder from a toy store, dollar store, etc. These recorders do not sound the same. If you already have a recorder, have your child bring it to school so that I may check to make sure it meets the correct specifications for sound quality. For health reasons, we cannot allow siblings in our school to share the same instrument.
As part of their learning, students will participate in “Recorder Karate”. Students will have the opportunity to earn belts as they learn to play the recorder. Each belt has a song with certain playing skills and notes that students will need to master. Each recorder karate belt, as in karate, becomes increasingly more difficult with color. During music class, students will learn notes, fingerings, and rhythms. Time will be provided for group and individual practice, however, the majority of practicing will be the student’s responsibility.
Happy Practicing!
